Psalm 20

New International Version

Psalm 20^[a]

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

¹May the Lord answer you when you are in distress;^(A)
    may the name of the God of Jacob^(B) protect you.^(C)
²May he send you help^(D) from the sanctuary^(E)
    and grant you support^(F) from Zion.^(G)
³May he remember^(H) all your sacrifices
    and accept your burnt offerings.^[b]^(I)
⁴May he give you the desire of your heart^(J)
    and make all your plans succeed.^(K)
⁵May we shout for joy^(L) over your victory
    and lift up our banners^(M) in the name of our God.

May the Lord grant all your requests.^(N)

⁶Now this I know:
    The Lord gives victory to his anointed.^(O)
He answers him from his heavenly sanctuary
    with the victorious power of his right hand.^(P)
⁷Some trust in chariots^(Q) and some in horses,^(R)
    but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.^(S)
⁸They are brought to their knees and fall,^(T)
    but we rise up^(U) and stand firm.^(V)
⁹Lord, give victory to the king!
    Answer us^(W) when we call!

10 Then Samuel took a flask^(A) of olive oil and poured it on Saul’s head and kissed him, saying, “Has not the Lord anointed^(B) you ruler over his inheritance?^[a]^(C) ²When you leave me today, you will meet two men near Rachel’s tomb,^(D) at Zelzah on the border of Benjamin. They will say to you, ‘The donkeys^(E) you set out to look for have been found. And now your father has stopped thinking about them and is worried^(F) about you. He is asking, “What shall I do about my son?”’

³“Then you will go on from there until you reach the great tree of Tabor. Three men going up to worship God at Bethel^(G) will meet you there. One will be carrying three young goats, another three loaves of bread, and another a skin of wine. ⁴They will greet you and offer you two loaves of bread,^(H) which you will accept from them.

⁵“After that you will go to Gibeah^(I) of God, where there is a Philistine outpost.^(J) As you approach the town, you will meet a procession of prophets^(K) coming down from the high place^(L) with lyres, timbrels,^(M) pipes^(N) and harps^(O) being played before them, and they will be prophesying.^(P) ⁶The Spirit^(Q) of the Lord will come powerfully upon you, and you will prophesy with them; and you will be changed^(R) into a different person. ⁷Once these signs are fulfilled, do whatever^(S) your hand^(T) finds to do, for God is with^(U) you.

⁸“Go down ahead of me to Gilgal.^(V) I will surely come down to you to sacrifice burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, but you must wait seven^(W) days until I come to you and tell you what you are to do.”

⁴By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended^(A) as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings.^(B) And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead.^(C)

⁵By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.”^[a]^(D) For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. ⁶And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him^(E) must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

⁷By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen,^(F) in holy fear built an ark^(G) to save his family.^(H) By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.^(I)
